Between business meetings I have to rush to the house to follow up on what is happening in Libya. Of course, I always thought Muamar Qaddafi was a mentally deranged man, but watching him talks on TV, I saw a rapid hallucinating man, I only had pity for the Libyans who had to put up with such a “leader” for 42 years. Not so sure many people around the world, especially in the US know any thing about Assila and its annual summer political, economic and intellectual festival. Too bad, for Assilla should be on every ones mind and the international medial should set aside few minutes a day to cover the events going on. Assila is a great idea, a fantastic idea. Like Arafat on his first historic visit to the Court of St. James, who missed the opportunity to addressed the wrongs committed by Great Britain against the Palestinians and its full responsibility for the Balfour Declaration as the root of the conflict that exiled the Palestinians and contributed to the death of several hundred thousands not to mention the more than 4 million exiles. The sweeping victory of Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party in Turkey’s most challenging and crucial parliamentary election is a testimony for the wise and visionary leadership of Erdogan as he challenges the military establishment and the parties that ruled Turkey for most of its recent history. In the Middle East and in the US, we have a habit of blaming the governments for all of the ills that afflict the nations. Sometime we go too far to the point where we blame the government for bad weather, and disaster.
In the US unlike the Middle East, there is a constitutional government with over couple of centuries of established rules that governs changes in government and in administration. The House of Representative is up for elections every two years, though 90 % does not change. The Senate one third changes every two years, though again, hardly a change takes place with the same faces coming back again and again. Read the rest of this entry »
