Gaza on my mind, part 2
24 01 2008
Finally and after 40 years the people of Gaza got it right and tore down that stupid wall. It is not the Berlin Wall, but to the Palestinian people of Gaza it was more than that. Gaza was a virtual prison, where over 1.5 millions were locked up on all sides. The tragic thing in all of this is that this wall was build by Israel with the approval of both Fatah’ Palestinian Authority and Egypt. When Israel decided the continued occupation of Gaza was too expensive it decided to unilaterally pull out and it made sure as it left that the people of Gaza are never free but prisoners in a place called Gaza.
The Palestinian Authority, the guys who ran Gaza as a racketeering organization, fleecing people left and right were the ones appointed by Mahmoud Abbas to negotiate with Israel control over all access including the one with Egypt. Never understood how any Palestinian can accept to negotiate such terms leaving Israel in control over the access to land, air and sea?. Of course one can understand the motives behind all of this. There is a mafia and this mafia is made up of Israelis and high ranking officers within Abbas’ Preventive Security organization who ran and who controlled Gaza for some times from the days of Yasser Arafat and who made a killing on all the products and good that came into Gaza and going out of Gaza. Security was the last thing on anyone’s mind. Controlling the access is a business generating millions of dollars in fees.
Don’t know what happened, but finally the people of Gaza woke up and decided to take matters into their own hands and tear that wall between Gaza and Egypt. Never understood how Israel can have control over a border that id far from its own borders? The actions of the people of Gaza is much more powerful than the 15,000 stupid, useless toy rockets that Hamas and Islamic Jihad are using to holding the people hostage.
Yes, it took the courage of some determined women to go for the gate followed by men and of course then came the “surge” not of George Bush, but of the people determined to be free and not accept their virtual prison. And then the wall came down. It was a simple act of courage and determination. Of course there were few stupid policemen who opened fired but I am sure if they continue they would have been eaten alive by an angry crowd fed up with the leadership in Gaza, fed up with the leadership in Ramallah and who challenged the Egyptian police of Hussni Mubarak to open fire. The people of Egypt are such a great people with a sense of Arab and Muslim nationalism and they were ready to open their arms and hearts to the people of Gaza.
However and sad to say, never understood why the Palestinian Authority or the people of Gaza accepted to be held hostages by Israel. There is no reason for them not to open the borders with Egypt even by force and no reasons whatsoever for the people to accept continued reliance on the supply of fuel and electricity from Israel. It is not free, the people pay for it and Israel makes look like it is doing Gazans such a great favor. No reasons whatsoever for the food, goods and services coming and going out of Gaza to be the prerogative of Israel. No reasons whatsoever for the people to accept that the fruits and vegetables rots because some god dam Israeli immigrant from Russia or Ethiopia decide to block the gates at the two crossing with Israel. Why ship through Israel when one can ship through Rafah and El-Arish? Israel can build a wall 1000 feet high between Gaza and Israel but no reasons and no logic behind Israel having control over the borders with Egypt. That shows the Arabs have no guts and no balls to say NO to Washington and to Tel-Aviv. Israel left Gaza and Gaza must declare its freedom and never accept to be a prison with Israel control all sides. Never understood why the Palestinian Authority even accepted international control over the borders with Gaza? Knowing that international monitors, like those in Hebron have no control over anything and are wimp and melt down when Israel whisper in their ears.
Never understood why the people of Gaza accept the continued firing of these stupid toy rockets and why they accept to be hostage to few young and reckless militias that has its own agenda? Time for Hamas leadership in Gaza to retire.
Tearing down the wall reminds me again of the lack of courage the Palestinians have in facing Israel. Oslo was never about ending the Occupation but a re-deployment of troops. So when Israel decided to reoccupy the area after the Second Itifida, less than a 100 of the people in Ramallah and El-Bireh or Nablus or Jennin took to the streets in defiance of the Israeli Army. What if hundreds of thousands of the people went to the streets or marched toward these criminal checkpoints? What would happen? Perhaps Israel will kill 100 innocent and unarmed protestors? Would Israel kill 1000 unarmed and innocent protestors, may be and yes, with Washington blessing and excuses that Israel is acting in self defense. Well, may be Tel-Aviv and Washington may and do justify the killing and cold blooded murder of a 1000 protestors, but would the world stand by and let this happen, very unlikely. I am sure hundreds of thousands of Israelis will take to the streets protesting the criminal actions of their government as they have done that before. We need to remember hundreds of thousands of Israelis took to the streets of Tel-Aviv protesting the murder in Sabra and Shatilla and protesting the War on Lebanon, when most Arab streets where empty.
The only way out of the Occupation, is not another Oslo, not another Annapolis, not Fatah or Hamas, but a massive uprising by the millions of people who should take to the streets and march toward all of the check points and tear them down and proceed to tear down the Apartheid Wall. Israel does and can get away, with support from Washington, can get away with killing Palestinians in cold blood in retail, but Israel even with the support of Washington could never gets away with wholesale murder. If Bush and Rice can justify such actions, the people of Israel could never accept their government to commit such mass murder. Well, time to forget about the Qassam rockets and time to pick tin pots and pans and march toward Israel and bring this criminal occupation to an end. But then where is the leadership to organize all this, they are in Davos.
