Thanks to our mutual friend, Norman Lemley I was able to meet with Eric Dawicki head of Northeast Maritime Institute. I have known Eric for a number of years and very happy and proud to say he is a good friend of mine. However in the years I have known him, I never knew his commitment to peace and reconciliation between Palestinians and Israelis. This is one man with no personal, political or economic interest in the area. However it is very clear his moral courage and his commitment to peace and reconciliations is something I never expected. Few days ago, I read a very interesting news item in one of the leading Arabic newspaper. The newspaper announced that Dr. Saeb Erekat the head of the PLO negotiating team with Israel decided, and after 3 years of research, decided to publish an academic manual on negations directed toward academic institutions, centers and students of conflict resolution. Not so sure many people around the world, especially in the US know any thing about Assila and its annual summer political, economic and intellectual festival. Dear Readers. I am sharing with you this very interesting article written by Ghassan Michael Rubeiz. Mr. Rubeiz write on national and international politics and also good source on what is happening in the US presidential election. The world can see and observe Israel debates the Occupation, while US politicians do not dare open their mouths lest they become something of the past. Israelis are not united in supporting their government’s policies of a four-decade festering occupation of Palestinian, Syrian and Lebanese territories. The occupation is costly, morally troubling and beyond the capacity of Israel to maintain. Israelis are relatively free to question the occupation; surprisingly, American politicians, especially politicians who are running for national elections, find it hard to question the occupation. If for nothing else, mere concern for Israel’s future should embolden Americans to be more discerning on issues of the Middle East. Years of silence by Palestinian” Sheiks” and intellectuals led us to where we are now. Arafat ruled the PLO and Fatah with iron fist, using bribery, intimidation even physical liquidation to silence every one. There was never a call for accountability of decisions, failures even financial corruptions. Time for a national salvation front to save the Palestinians from themselves and from the Israeli.
